Tender engines are single-engined (having a single chassis, (after Diesel locomotives) firebox, and boiler) steam locomotives (and in rare cases, diesel locomotives) that haul a car (known as a tender) directly behind the locomotive that stores coal (occasionally wood or oil) and water.

Tender engines are usually main line engines, units, or locomotives while switchers, or shunters are typically tank engines.
