The LYR Class 28 "Hughes", was a type of rebuilt 0-6-0 steam locomotive of the Lancashire and Yorkshire's Class 27 designed by John Aspinall. Only twenty engines were built new, whereas sixty-three have been rebuilt from the class 27. All 83 engines in total were built (and rebuilt) at Horwich.
They often operated short freight and passenger trains, and were occasionally used on branch lines or as switchers or shunters. They were eventually retired during 1950's.
The "Hughes" Class has added a Belpaire firebox and extended the footplate and sandbox as opposed to the original Class 27. This locomotive or engine, the first of the series from the Horwich works (March, 1912), was fitted with a Schmidt Superheater. All were scrapped by 1957, and none were preserved.
