The Southern 6910 or K&T 10 is one of two surviving Mikados that ran on the Kentucky & Tennessee Railway. It is well known as being a stablemate to Southern 4501 when it ran for the Kentucky & Tennessee Railway as #12

History[]

#10 was built by Baldwin in May 1920 for the Kentucky and Tennessee Railway as their #10. #10 ran on the K&T for over 43 years before being retired from revenue service when the K&T bought 3 ALCo S-4s from the D&RGW to replace the steam locomotives in February 1964. Her sisters, #11 and #12 were sold off around this time. #11 was sold off to an army training facility to move targets and #12 was famously sold to Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRM) and renumbered back to 4501. In 1965, the locomotive was sold to the TVRM where it was renumbered and repainted to resemble a Southern Mikado and was intended to be used in the Southern Steam Program. Unfortunately, on the day of the excursion the engine encountered issues due to leaking boiler tubes. The engine limped into Cleveland and was towed back to Chattanooga cold.

Disposition[]

#10 is currently in storage at TVRM with no plans to operate the locomotive. Rumor has it that TVRM plans to cosmetically restore the locomotive and dress it up as a NC&STL Mikado
