Milwaukee Road No. 265 is an S3 Class 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotive, built in July 1944 by Alco for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad, or the Milwaukee Road. It is one of the ten last steam locomotives delivered to the line.

It was used for both freight and passenger service on the Milwaukee Road until It went into storage in 1954 as the Milwaukee Road ended steam operations, and retired soon afterwards.

Three years later, it was donated to the city of Milwaukee, WI, where it went on open air display until 1975.

By then, 265 was donated to the Illinois Railway Museum, where it was put on static display. It remains there today.

Trivia[]

  • It is one of only two S3s to have survived the scrapper's torch.
  • The only other S-3 that survived the scrapper's torch is sister engine #261.
