A speedometer is an instrument that measures the speed at which a vehicle is traveling. Some speedometers are round with numbers and a pointer like that of the hands on a clock face, though others are digital, like many wristwatches.

Most locomotives have speedometers, even though originally they were not as necessary as on motor-vehicles. Now they have become necessary due to most, if not all, modern rail networks having speed-limits.
